Nigeria: N836 million for generators

The 2014 budget proposal before the National Assembly has specified that the Presidency and other ministries as well as department and agencies of government will spend N836.6 million to fuel plants and generators in 2014.

One must ask about the promise the government made that Nigerians will start experiencing significant improvement in power supply from Q1 next year, after the privatisation of the power sector.

  1. Instead of investing so much money in Generators, common sense would ideally dictate that capital expenditure should be funnelled into a ‘lasting solution’ to the power challenges we have. Everyone knows that generators should only be a secondary option; sustainable energy supply for the entire population is an imperative requirement to serve as a catalyst to achieve true economic independence.
