As the year winds down, looks like there is now more hope for Nigerian athletics. At the World Championships in Moscow, it was the first time in over a decade that Nigeria won medals in the championships. The highlights include Blessing Okagbare breaking the 14-year old African women 100m record. She ran 10.86 seconds compared to Gloria Alozie’s 10.90. She won silver at the World Championships in Russia for long jump 6.99m (Chioma Ajumwa’s was 7.12m). She also won bronze medal in 200m.
US- based Ivorian Murielle Ahoure claimed two silvers in 100 and 200m while Okagbare took home 200m bronze. This is the first time an African made presence on the podium in both the women’s 100 and 200m.

Nigerian juniors topped the medal tables at the maiden African Youth Championships held in Warri, Delta State and the African Junior Championships in Mauritius
Lets hope this winning streak continues in the New Year
